Since 1894, Kids With A Promise has served children from New York City’s most impoverished neighborhoods. Thousands of young lives have been transformed through our summer camp, after-school and urban day camp programs. In recent years, however, children “graduated” from our programs after sixth grade – at exactly the age when they were making crucial lifestyle decisions.
In order to successfully shepherd these children into their teenage years and beyond, the Kids With A Promise Leadership Academy pairs teenagers (ages 13 to 16) with volunteer adult mentors. Mentors and teens meet together twice a month to form relationships of accountability, develop positive decision-making and problem-solving skills, and prepare for college or careers. Mentors meet with program staff one additional time each month for development and support.
The first two years of the Leadership Academy entail group and individual mentoring with a focus on developing the skills needed to be successful in college and the workplace. After the first two years, students participate in job shadowing, college test preparation, and internships. Upon reaching age 16, the participants may apply for summer positions at Mont Lawn Camp.
